Prefab Homes Design for Tropical Environments

Great homes design made from insulated shipping containers and bamboo has been developed by design and construction firm located in Costa Rica 'Bamboo Groves'



This great prefab house design developed for the tropical climate, these prefab homes are different from the designs we are accustomed to — those designed for temperate or cooler climates. Many of these prefab and shipping container homes focus on passive heating and cooling. But in warmer climates, such as Central America, construction requires a different tactic - insulating from the heat and providing lots of natural ventilation to help cool.



The designer at Bamboo Groves uses Intermodal Steel Building Units (ISBUs), which are insulated shipping containers, in creating the framework of the home. Then Guadua Bamboo, which is one of the fastest growing bamboos, is harvested from nearby Costa Rican bamboo plantations and used as the structural beams for the roof. Current designs range from 100 sq meters with one ISBU up to 250 sq meter split level villas with three ISBUs. Construction should take less than 5 months and be very affordable.



Concrete is a very common and accessible building material in Central America, so it is used for countertops and other built-in pieces of furniture like benches and bed stands. Other sustainable elements could be added to these homes, such as a greywater recycling system, rainwater collection, and wind or solar systems. Green building supplies like low-VOC paints, formaldehyde-free cabinets are not easily accessible there, but as the demand for these items grow, they will surely be available soon.

This modern lakefront prefab home design is a beautiful paradise residence of James and Rui which is designed by architect Rocio Romero. The Missouri-based designer is well known for her minimalist prefab homes, which arrive flat-packed and can go up in a few months' time. James and Rui worked with Rocio to develop a standard LV Home (Rocio's trademark design) with a custom interior that would make the most of their incredible natural surroundings. The highlight of this home is definitely the views.





















Although the minimalist design of a prefab house is not for everyone, it works for James and Rui. Their main priority was to showcase the landscape around their home, and the spare aesthetic makes the views the focal point in this house.





















There are also some advantages to prefab building. It's greener in some ways than traditional construction: the materials come flat-packed to minimize shipping costs and emissions, many prefab homes are designed to accommodate green heating and cooling systems, and the deep walls in James and Rui's home increase energy efficiency by almost 50 percent compared to traditional homes.

La Reserva House in Colina, Chile is a low-cost housing solution with 140 m2 constructed area designed by Sebastian Irarrazaval. This house to be sold and repeated in many places as concerned people exist. In this regard it relates to the idea of the container since it has no place.



























With the purpose of reducing construction time, geometry is simple and the construction system is on prefabricated basis. Its arrangement is a cross shaped where, in order to embrace the nearby landscape, public areas are placed in second level in a 4 meters high cube.























This severe volume is covered with steel plates that create a double facade that gets hot and therefore increases ventilation of the space in between , refreshing the inner side of the wall

With regard to materials, the building recognizes the inherent uncertainty and inevitability of weathering as a continuation of the building process rather than as a force antagonistic to it.

The itHouse is a design system developed by Taalman Koch that utilizes a series of components prefabricated off-site in order to better control the construction waste, labor, and quality of the finished product. Conceived as a small house with glass walls and open floor plan, the itHouse maximizes the relationship of the occupant to the surrounding landscape while minimizing the impact to delicate site conditions.
